Frequently Asked Questions about Individual Therapy

What exactly happens in an individual therapy session?

During your therapy session, we create a safe space for you to explore your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Each session typically lasts about 50 minutes. We’ll talk through your concerns, work together to identify patterns, develop coping strategies, and set achievable goals. The first few sessions focus on understanding your needs, while later sessions build on this foundation. We believe therapy should be collaborative—you’re the expert on your life, and we’re here to guide the process with our clinical expertise.

How do I know if individual therapy is right for me?

If you’re experiencing emotional distress, relationship difficulties, troubling thoughts, or simply feel stuck in any area of your life, individual therapy can help. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy—many people seek therapy for personal growth, increased self-awareness, or help navigating life transitions. During our initial consultation, we can discuss your specific situation and determine if individual therapy aligns with your needs, or if another approach might better serve you.

How long does individual therapy typically last?

The length of therapy varies based on your specific goals and needs. Some clients benefit from short-term therapy (8-12 sessions) focused on specific issues, while others find longer-term support more beneficial for complex or deep-seated concerns. We’ll discuss timeframes during your initial consultation and regularly evaluate your progress. Remember that therapy isn’t a lifetime commitment—our goal is to help you develop the tools you need for greater wellbeing and independence.

How often will I attend therapy sessions?

Most clients begin with weekly sessions to build momentum and establish a therapeutic relationship. Consistent weekly meetings help maintain progress and provide ongoing support during difficult periods. As you develop new skills and notice improvements, we may transition to bi-weekly or monthly sessions. We’ll work together to determine the schedule that best supports your healing journey and adjust as needed.

Will what I share in therapy remain confidential?

Your privacy is paramount to us. What you share in therapy remains confidential, with a few limited exceptions required by law. These exceptions include situations involving imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, suspected abuse of vulnerable individuals (children, elderly, or disabled persons), or if records are subpoenaed by court order. We’ll discuss these confidentiality boundaries in detail during your first session, answering any questions you may have about privacy.

What therapeutic approaches do you use for individual therapy?

We integrate several evidence-based approaches tailored to your specific needs. These may include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address thought patterns, EMDR for trauma processing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for mindfulness and values work, and solution-focused techniques for specific goals. Our therapists have diverse training backgrounds, allowing us to match you with someone whose approach resonates with your preferences and needs. The most important factor is finding an approach that works for you.

How do I prepare for my first therapy session?

Before your first session, take some time to reflect on what brings you to therapy and what you hope to gain. You might jot down specific concerns, questions, or goals, though this isn’t required. Arrive about 15 minutes early to complete initial paperwork, or complete forms sent to you beforehand. Remember, it’s normal to feel nervous—many people do. Know that the first session is largely about getting to know each other and discussing next steps, not diving deeply into difficult material right away.

Does insurance cover individual therapy at Renewed Stories?

We don’t directly accept insurance, but we can provide you with monthly statements that you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement. Many of our clients successfully receive partial reimbursement through their out-of-network benefits.

Before your first appointment, we recommend contacting your insurance provider to ask about their coverage for out-of-network mental health services. You might ask about your deductible, what percentage they reimburse, and if they require any specific documentation. We’re happy to help you understand this process, as we believe therapy should be as accessible as possible.

What if I don't connect with my therapist?

The therapeutic relationship is fundamental to successful therapy, and we understand that not every pairing is the right fit. If you feel your therapist isn’t quite right for you after a few sessions, we encourage you to discuss this openly. These conversations can sometimes lead to adjustments that improve the relationship. If needed, we’ll gladly help you transition to another therapist in our practice or provide referrals elsewhere. Finding the right connection is important, and we prioritize your comfort and progress above all.

Can I do individual therapy online rather than in-person?

Yes, we offer secure telehealth options for individual therapy that are just as effective as in-person sessions for many concerns. Online therapy provides the same quality of care with added convenience, especially for those with busy schedules, transportation challenges, or health concerns. Our telehealth platform is HIPAA-compliant, user-friendly, and requires only a device with internet connection. Some clients prefer a hybrid approach, alternating between in-person and virtual sessions based on their needs and schedule.
